For thousands of people in Québec, the ferry is the road to work, to school or to the island. The website has to answer one question first: is my crossing running?

The Société des traversiers du Québec runs the ferries across the St. Lawrence and to the islands. In 2013, it wanted more of its service online: booking a crossing with a vehicle, buying tickets and passes, and getting alerts when the weather changes the schedule. Libéo got the mandate, with a new brand from the STQ to carry onto the web.

I was the designer on the mandate. Starting from the approved wireframes, I designed the site's look and every template, from the home page to the booking flow, the account, the network maps and the pictograms, then stayed on for the launch in 2014 and the pages that followed.

Take over the design. September 2013: the brief, the approved wireframes and the STQ's new brand, handed to me.
First four pages. September 27, 2013: the home, a crossing page and the booking flow, presented to the STQ.
Every template. Fall 2013: the account, tickets and passes, alerts, emails and faxes, then a second version.
Maps and icons. Winter 2014: the network maps and the pictograms, approved in February.
Launch and evolve. Spring 2014: a load test of accounts and alerts, the launch, then new pages until 2017.

Where the STQ is today

Traversiers.com is still the STQ's website, now in a later redesign. It lists 13 crossings and maritime services, with a customer account and alerts by subscription. In 2024–2025, the nine crossings the STQ runs itself carried more than 4.8 million passengers and 2.26 million vehicles. Figures from the STQ's 2024–2025 annual report.

  • 4.8M+passengers in 2024–2025
  • 2.26Mvehicles in 2024–2025
  • 13crossings and maritime services
